Need help with edge shape

Post by woodstripboats »

Would someone be willing to help or set me in the right direction . :?: I have this 7"by 7" square post that I'm trying to put a edge shape on. The shape needs to be at 45 deg. to the face. See attached Aspire 9.5 file.
thank you

If you only have a few to do I would lay those notches out and remove them with a sharp chisel.

That said, the next thing I would do is build a fixture to hold the pieces at a 45 degree angle so I could run a 90 degree bit straight across them.

Hopefully your machine has enough Z axis and bridge clearance to do that.

Just use a 90° Bit assigned to either Pockets or Offset vectors drawn where you want the chamfers. Several of the Free Projects use this technique. (Take a look at the Pineapple project for just one example).

Thank you for the reply

TReischl there are a lot of these to carve so my trusty chisel is not a realistic option. I have considered fixturing the pieces at 90 deg. but that would be a last resort. I do have a 12" Z axis however.

MTylerfl I have tried that method but as you can see in the attached photo it doesn't seem to work. The 90 deg vbit tapers the chamfer on the ends. The face side of chamfer needs to be 1.625" at a 45deg to the two faces.
Is there another way? Am I missing something obvious?

thanks for your help and input, very much appreciated.

Post your file here, Charlie, so we can take a look.

Or, contact support@vectric.com and send them the file along with a link to this thread so they can see what you’re after.

thanks Michael; the shape file for the 7" by 7" post is attached in my first post. It is just part of a larger drawing shown here in this DXF attachment.

Nice DXF file I guess. Doesn't help figuring out what toolpaths you have already tried to effect the preview images.

See attached file for method to get the end of the chamfers correct. Now you just have to figure how to do the long face between them.

Hi Charlie,

When we ask for your file, we always mean your Vectric project file, except in very rare cases when something else is specifically noted.

So, may we see your Aspire file? If too large to post here, use DropBox, post the download link, etc

Getting the 1.625 across the chamfer is exactly one of the issues. I have tried a Vbit ; To get the shapes I have also tried a single line sweep as well as a double line sweep. Thought that if I could get the shapes then could just machine it with a ball nose.
Thanks for looking at this.

OK After a large cup of coffee I think that this will work.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to look at this and offer suggestions . Much appreciated!
Never underestimate the power of the two rail sweep!
