Solidworks Files

Post by jdonaldson »

I have a customer that has some SolidWorks files, what would be the best way for me
to get them so that I can import into Aspire.

Thanks

John

Depends on what you are doing.
Either 3D .stl files, or 2D .dxf files of sketches or drawings.

If you have access to Rhinoceros you could save from SW into IGS format then pull that into Rhino and save as Rhino native 3DM format then pull that into Aspire. This preserves the “mathematical” surface as long as possible and avoids the sometimes gross polygon meshes that STL export would give.

What I have done is open the SW file in other software then save as STL. Then import.

My customer sent me the exported files but, I still am having trouble importing just get a
solid piece nothing that I can create roughing / finish tool paths from. I know the file comes
in very large but get the same results after resizing to the correct 10x10x2 size.

Thanks

Hi John,

Looks like all you need to do is orient the model flat to the Zero Plane during the import process. (And maybe adjust the size so it fits the material size you created.)

I believe there is a Vectric video tutorial on this. (Although the orientation tools in the import window are pretty self-explanatory.)

You can also check the User Manual for importing and orienting models if you need to.

Here's a link to a video tutorial dealing with importing and orienting a 3D model:
