Hiya
Haven't been here much lately.
I am trying to carve an STL file.
Let's say it is a plate.
Instead of laying nicely horizontally on the tabletop, this model insists on standing vertically with the zero plane cutting through the middle.
I have tries everything I know the get the darned thing to lay horizontally on the zero plane but then it insists on being upside down so flat bottom is the top and the carved part is the bottom.
my new machine is not very good at carving bottoms up, I only have 3 axes.
What am I doing wrong, please?

Re: STL Carving
I don't see the issue. As you're in Australia, for me the model has the right orientation.Ms Wolffie wrote:my new machine is not very good at carving bottoms up, I only have 3 axes.
If I remember correctly, there's a Vectric video tutorial for importing stl. Probably the best way to answer your questions. Did you have a look?
Best regards

Did you try the different orientation positions ?

Thanks,

Re: STL Carving
Ah! I expect that model is from either Solidworks or other software. For whatever reason these programs insist that the Y-axis is up/down contrary to just about everyone else. I am continually rotating students' models by 90 degrees when I get them from them.Ms Wolffie wrote:this model insists on standing vertically with the zero plane cutting through the middle.
The funny thing, though, is that I could tell the people who wrote the photo-rendering portion of Solidworks were not the ones who wrote the modelling code. Why? Shadows for objects would appear "on the wall". Showing that the rendering guys knew that Z was up/down.
