Intermediate Digital Design and Fabrication Course

Post by AndyPitts »

At the risk of coming off as tooting my own horn, I had several inquiries at Aspire Camp last week regarding a course I will be teaching at Port Townsend School of Woodworking July 18-22, so I thought I should share this with the group. The course is a follow-on to the basic course taught the week before and is designed for those fairly comfortable with 2 and 2-1/2D work in Aspire (or V-Carve) and want to move into modelling. My philosophy goes along the lines of teaching people to fish so they can eat for their entire lives, so I want to stress how to use the software and machine (strategy and technique) and use small projects only to demonstrate.

Vectric has agreed to supply us with temporary licenses for Aspire for those who don't have the software, and ShopBot will have three Desktop machines there. Subjects I intend to cover are importing models, making your own relief model, v-carving onto a model, letting a model into a dish (with the Multiply Command), cutting parts of a model to make new components, two-sided work in 3D models, importing a two sided model and working out how to actually cut it and making your own two-sided model, making tiled toolpaths, making inlays, and laminating material before carving. Also, there are other extra curricular techniques I could touch on, such as digital probing, using the indexer head, and using vacuum to secure work to the table.

If interested, here is the link to the Port Townsend School of Woodworking.

Do you teach this course somewhere in the southeast US? WA is a bit of a trek from GA?
