Where did that tutorial go???

Post by dustcitydesigns »

Hey Everyone,

So we're working on a project right now that is very large. There are some areas in the piece with tons of detail and other areas with no detail at all. With this piece the roughing will take 1 hour and the finish pass would take almost 12 hours! Yikes! I remember seeing a tutorial at some point that showed how to make this really easy. You basically rough machined out an area then turned that machined area into a bitmap. You then compared that bitmap with the bitmap of your 3d model. It would then select all the areas that require further machining and create vectors around them. I just can't seem to remember which tutorial that was in. Any one know off the top of their head?

Thanks,

Josh

The tutorial and technique is called "Rest Maching" it is tutorial F12.
If you don't have it on your machine go to Vectric.com and search for it.

Be aware that you will probably have to sand out some witness lines where there is a transition between areas machined with a smaller bit.

See this discussion: recarving 3d with a smaller tool
