Curious to what these spikes represent [3D]

Post by Xxray »

Am playing around with a crucifix model with a bark texture background, and I am noticing all of these spikes springing up all over the place. Most are on one side, the other side is pretty clean. I am guessing these might play havoc with toolpathing. Adjusting model and base height has an effect, haven't messed with it much but there appears to be no way to totally eliminate them.
I have tried it with and without zero plane, doesn't seem to have any effect.

Really just for my education here, I cut a model just like this and didn't have any problems, that one I didn't zoom in and note if these spikes were present.

I have seen this effect...not sure but I think it is a result of the math trying to resolve itself at the pixel level. If you construct an outline around the crucifix, and then reduce that outline by .005 in each direction, then use that outline to trim the model a lot of the spikes will go away.

Angie's suggestion is one that I use often...

Here's more info to consider,,,,.if the spikes are on the texture side, increase that vector by a small bit and remove that part of the texture component....
One issue you will have is that there will be a space between the crucifix and the texture.
You could do a bit of sculpting on the space by pushing it into the void.... ( if that makes sense )
or you could increase the size of the crucifix slightly to cover the space....

If the spikes are on the crucifix , sculpting would be the best answer... ( for me )

Another is to make sure that each component is in the "merge" mode and then simply raise the model height of the crucifix..or lower the texture..

Lots of ways to correct this..

Thanks for the replies, I can say that raising or lowering the model, the spikes raise and lower with it.
I'll tinker around with it as per suggestions and see what I can do - Amazing what you can find sometimes with zoom, without zoom they were barely noticeable.

I think they show the wood left after the cut. You will see it quite often on pockets and whatnot. Change the boundaries a bit and they will probably go away.

Or not, I could be just thinking I know what they are...

Screenshots are modeling shots and not toolpath preview

Under the Component Tree, right click the component and under Combine Mode, select merge. That should take away the spikes.
