3d cut is too deep

Post by hdtheater »

I was carving a raised border on a panel and the tool path for the border went an additional 1/16" into the material than it should have. This is not the first time I experienced this. So, I know I am doing something wrong. :)

In the above photo the groove should not be there. The model is 1/8" high and I had carved a 1/4" deep pocket all around it. So, it should have had 1/8" ledge plus an 1/8" rounded border.

This shot was taken as I pocketed an additional 1/8" of the material to get the ridge I was after.

The machine was zeroed correctly when I changed bits. Any pros out there have any suggestions?
Thanks,

-Eric

Any help on this one? I just started working on another project and it happened to me again.

This time was on a slice of a 3d model. When I went to glue up the slices I am missing about an 1/8" at the bottom of each slice.
Thanks,

-Eric

Can you post the file? It's hard to tell from your description what exactly the problem is.
And does the preview screen look correct? WYSIWYG, usually.

I have been trying to remove elements from the file to get it under the 2mb limit. Zipping it I am still at 3.19mb.

I'll upload when I get it there. Thanks for offering to take a look.

I ended up creating a new file and copying the elements and toolpaths over. Still had to zip the file!

The file is a rar file, but that extension is not allowed on the site.

The file and tool paths look OK.
If you use a "Large area clearance tool" it will cut the pocket cut time in half. But maybe add other problems (requires accurate tool zeroing.)
Have you checked the "tightness" of everything? If you get a step where it shouldn't be, the machine may have problem (something loose or slipping, leaning a hand on the table while cutting...)

It's not a small area that does it. It's the entire job that is off.

Could a 3D tool path have a different setting than a 2d tool path that would make the depth be different?

If the file is good, then it moves to the machine. Since the entire job is impacted, I am wondering if it could be a Mach3 configuration.

Is the bed of your machine level? That might be the problem. If the bed is off by 1/4" from end to end.

It's flat. The 2d tool paths are just fine. I fixed the job above by carving another pocket deeper to accommodate the difference.
