Users group 2010 Fireplace picture?

Post by bgriggs »

I remember attending the Vectric Users group meeting in either 2010 or 2009. There was a fireplace on display at that meeting, I think maybe Jim McGrew made it from James Booth design. Does anyone know if there is a picture of that floating around somewhere? I remember he joined the parts in an unusual place/method to get the miters looking right. That technique would be helpful on a project I am working on.

Hi Bill,

I'm the one that made the mantel that James designed for the Memphis UG meeting.

Is this the picture you are thinking of?

Thanks Tim.

Actually I was referring to the front of the unit where instead of mitered angle you used a straight line.

Perhaps you are referring to the egg and dart molding around the firebox opening.

Instead of worrying about the corner miters I machined the top as an inverted 'U' (left side shown in picture) and the remaining side segments were just straight pieces.

This is not the way I would have normally done it, but it helped make the mantle easy to disassemble and reassemble for transport. (After the meeting, it was
shipped to England and resides in the Vectric office building)
