tool path simulation for 1.5 inch end mill incredibly slow

Post by fluted_hope »

Greetings everyone. I am a new user here and have a simple question:

Material block: 5 inches by 10 inches

Tool: End Mill 1.5 inch

When creating a toolpath for a pocket of 1/16 inch using this 1.5 inch end mill on a board 5x10 the simulation is incredibly slow (the simulation takes about a minute and the actual tool path estimate is only a minute).

What is causing that particular simulation to be THAT slow? Other simulations I've tried are much faster.

Can you speed it up? I have already deselected the "animation" and "show tool" toggles.

Another other ideas?

Well, I joined the ranks in 2013. Never posted or anything. I'm having this problem as of version 10. whatever.... The link in this post that claims to help gets a 404 error. OMG. I loved this product all the way up to version 10. I must be an idiot. Was it the employee owned situation? Why would it take 4 times longer to simulate a tool path with a 2 inch fly cutter? It is crazy. I'm having this problem right now. Not 2013.

Just ran a test surfacing a 26"x26" rectangle using the Pocketing Toolpath and a 2" EM 31% stepover 70 IPM 1/6" pocket depth, 1 pass.

At Standard Preview Simulation Quality it takes 0:04 seconds to preview.
At Maximum Preview Simulation Quality it takes 3:11 minutes to preview.

The bigger the tool in relation to the material the slower the preview. It's a simple maths problem. The larger tool affects more pixels so there are more calculations to do.

The smaller the material in relation to the bit the slower the preview will be. With the same settings a 6" square pocket with a large tool will take a lot longer than a 24" pocket with the same tool.

The preview simulation quality (toolpaths menu) makes a huge difference in these circumstances. A standard preview can take a few seconds where as a high quality one can take several minutes and cane the CPU in the process.

Thank you for responding to my post. Your explanations have helped me in a big way. Thanks again. Also, please forgive if that message sounded rude. I was frustrated and it may have came out a bit.

No worries, we've all been there at one stage in the CNC journey.
