spiral gaget does not work on a taper leg

Post by Dclifton2 »

When using the spiral gaget on a tapered colume if you do a project the tool path on 3D model it doesn't cut the spiral the complete distance. Is there a way around this, or do I have to do the tool path line manually.
Thanks
Don

In order for the taper to work this way you need to have the part parallel to your spindle. So you would have to have way of adjusting the A/axis. On my machine (Legacy Arty) you can do this by lifting the rail to the proper angle.
I hope this helps.

I know how to do this manually but doesn't work in gadget. there should be a way if the gaget worked right.

Just an idea.
On the toolpath page at the bottom do you have (project toolpath onto 3d model checked)?
I have used this gadget many times with no problem.

Yes, I did. when you use a second two rail sweep profile with the spiral gaget it doesn't use the parts of the spire that extend past the work area once you click on the "project tool path onto 3D"

I just tried it again. setup a wrap job, then setup a spiral wrap. Your toolpath extend past the work piece like it should. Now do another two rail sweep and generate a tool path. everything is great till you tell it to project tool path onto 3D and the extended lines get cliped at the edge of the work piece.

You need to make the underlying shape, (that you want to project toolpath onto) large enough so that it is under ALL the toolpath.

The Wrapped Job Setup gadget is OK for very basic wrapping tasks.

When you start to do anything more complex, it is better to set up your own material size stc. So that you can accommodate extra material where it may be needed.

Although not specific to your question, this thread does talk about some underlying principals of multiple turn wrapping,
