deep bowl

Post by kevrgood »

Want to cut this bowl out of 3" stock. It is approx. 3 x 7 x 24 with tapered sides. Have no idea where to even begin drawing this never mind how to toll path it. I figure I needed to draw the bottom first and cut that then place it in a jig to flip it over and cut the inside out.

...Or cut the inside first, then flip it over on its still-flat face in the parent material; then cut the bottom; and finally profile cut it to release it from the parent material.

I would think the inside and the bottom would be two versions of the same shape...only bigger for the bottom. Maybe a two rail sweep?

Maybe this is too uniform for you. But this two rail sweep could be the bottom?

Seems to me you could use the distortion tool on the rails and make it look more handcarved...

The sun moon bowl I carved recently was almost three inches tall. You can check out the thread here:

If you read down the thread some, I detailed out a few links that may help you get started.

Good luck!

Tim's Instructional right up is outstanding, I just wanted to mention that if you don't have a 3"in cutter I should cut the brim of the bowl last. When you cut the back of the bowl first it will thin down the material thickness so you wont have to cut the profile all the way to the bottom.

how can the model be drawn so both profiles, top and bottom, can be shown at the same time. In other words once the bottom has been cut how can the top be cut out of the same piece and be seen in the 3d view? so far I have to do two seperate models...one for the bottom and one for the top.

Aspire cannot show both top and bottom cut at the same time. Unfortunately you need to to do them both separately.

You can however see a cross section using the measure tool in the new version of Aspire.

Have you tried to zip the file up? You can normally decrease the size significantly by using winrar, winzip etc.

i made some bowls creating virtual tools..

first need to figure the profile of the bowl.. in this example i calculated with 3 inch tall and 7inch wide material..

the red lines are on separated layer, and you can create a virtual profile tool with them..

for outside need one, and for inside two tool. for the inside part need two, because one for the bowl inside part, and one for the edge around..

when you create the inside part you could make a level outside of the bowl, to stop from falling ballendmill

if everything is fail, you couldnt get trough, i post a model... it is 3ds format, and need to rename
from *.TXT to *.3DS

pan_w_handle.txt on the bottom of this post

forum dont allow upload 3ds format

pictures are showing how you can import it... in the crv file workarea is set as large as the model require
bottom and top need to imported as original...the actual bowl is 24x7x3
excesses are 0.75... so within import you will see 25.5 x 8.5 what is the rigth size for this..

best regard
viktor

for other readers, if you have only cut3d you also can cut this... i think for christmas a good addition on the table

edit
i forget to mention i made some post about a plate... that is a rounded project but for matching two side it migth gives idea...

tried to create profiles for the inside of the bowl...but they wont go all the way around and make a smooth transition on the inside bottom of the bowl...the problem lies in the proper profile and the correct two rail sweep...have not found anything that shows me and example of this type of project. it will be cut out of 3" stock with a tapered perimeter, flat bottom , and a continous angled bowl inside. I saw the example sent to me which showed cuts both top and bottom....didnt think aspire could do that?
