Need help with STL

Post by Len-Tikular »

I'm struggling to inlay this veterans STL onto my workpiece.
Workpiece is 180wide 200 tall.
I'd like the badge maybe 2 mm below the surface.
The STL is huge so it has to be scaled down a great del.
I create 'new' with 20mm thickness, import 3d vectors, and then scale down the badge.
So the when the trouble begins, the badge imports onto my workpiece but I cannot seem to set the depth below the surface of the workpiece.
Maybe I out to 'map' model to the workpiece ??

I'd appreciate a little help.

You had a pocket toolpath set up. I deleted that and without making any other changes I ran 3DR and 3DF toolpaths with a 1/4 and 1/8th ball nose and this is what I got.
Obviously, would be better with another smaller 3DF mill.

Thanks guys, methinks I created the pocket in an attempt to get the model close to the surface of the material.

You can adjust the model position in the material with the slider in the toolpath material setup screen

Maybe something like this? I made several changes.
Set the depth of the pocket to the same depth as the component
Added extra clearing bits to get into the smaller areas of the pocket
Added some draft to the component
Added a 3D toolpath for just the component

Here is a link to the file.

Hi Steven,
Many thanks for your solution,
I did manage to achieve the same results last night by creating the pocket as you did,
Difference was to use a 1mm tapered ball nose bit throughout. But I thought your use of the tolling was better.
Once again, many thanks from the Scottish Borders.

The 1mm endmill for the finish toolpath was a mistake on my part. I'm not accustomed to using metric and I selected the wrong bit. A 1mm TBN works much better.

It did indeed Steve, 1mm TBN worked well.
