Wanted Sliced double sided job input

Post by ohiolyons »

Does Vectric's software support a sliced double sided job.

I've played around with a test case and it appears too awkwardly. The manual doesn't say it can or can't.
Haven't try to cut yet hoping someone has and can confirm my suspicions.

The issue (in my mind) is since components from TOP and BOTTOM are not Joined (baked) you have to make a leap of faith it will work.

I think this is the way it works??

Lets pretend 2" thick material. 1" slices to keep the math simple.
So when it slices the TOP it creates 2 1" slabs top one being A, bottom B.

Now when you slice the BOTTOM into 2 1" slices
You actually have to cut the B as the top of the BOTTOM sheet.
Then you cut A as the bottom of the BOTTOM sheet.

Hope this makes sense to at least one person, really more than one.

So Vectric no one is responding how about chiming in here?

Am I right?

I assume some of the all answer people have passed this one by so could one of you Beta testers put a bug in Vectric's ear?

Me sending this directly to Vectric only gets me the answer.

Guess I'll go ahead and cut a demo to see if it works.

Created a small scale version of what I need to cut. Components on top layer are convex, on the bottom concave.

Conclusion from test case:

Yes it is possible in theory, but in the real world not very practical.
Your results will vary heavily on the type of components you are trying to cut.
Less complex models may work just fine.

In my case not very practical because several of the bottom convex components got severely fragmented and or slender from slice to slice. Adding tabs would have been a nightmare.

So unless Vectric refutes this, doubled sided slicing probably won't work for you.

Hi John,

I made the Peanut Dish Vectric project way back in Aspire version 8

I created the peanut model, then made the dish “concave shell” using the Offset Model feature to yield a maximum uniform wall-thickness for the dish. Sliced everything and laid it all out as a two-sided carve on three boards.

Maybe that’s the kind of thing you’re talking about? Not sure because we don’t have a file or screenshots of your intended project.

Here is the link to the Peanut Shell Dish project if you want to take a look:

Thanks that reinforces what I thought I knew. Certain shapes work well others could get complicated.

So the actual carve is in HDU foam 10" x 30", 6"
The side of the glass has a 7 degree taper cone.
That conical taper is cut into the back of the model.

It is beer foam running over the edge of a 7ft pilsner glass.

Here is a twist, on a 3 slice double sided job.

Slices 2 from both sides would be a true double sided cut.

Slices from both sides 1 and 3 would be single sided cuts

On a 4, 5, ... to infinity sliced double sided job only the middle slices would be double all rest single.

I wonder if exporting entire model as an STL then use segmenting in version 11 to make true double side cuts.
I'll report back.

Model doesn't export well the backside edges are pixelated. Like when you have two components, one set to add and they barely touch.
