Triquetra Extrude and Weave

Post by gkas »

I'm making a salt cellar for a friend . They want a triquetra design and provided a pretty decent picture for a trace. I decided to try it with an extrude and weave. I drew the vectors and a very simple cross section. I can get fancy after I get the basic design. This first pass looks pretty decent, except that I can't get rid of the overlaps on the points of the tri. Do I have to manually blend?

Hi gkas,

I used the extrude and weave option with over and under option.
It worked for what I was looking to do. Maybe if your looking a negative relief, the subtract option in the combine mode.
Just an idea.

Good Luck,
Brooks

Changing the profile to a rounded one does get rid of the problem. I was wondering what to do if I wanted the square profile.

gkas,

I misread the initial statement. My bad.
I went and rebuilt it with the 2 Rail Sweep. The overlap went away although so did the weave.

If this works for you, I created the internal oval, then offset that outwards. Then repeated for the other two components.

If you convert the top line in your profile to a smooth bezier (using 'S') and move the node up to add a very slight bend, the edges start to merge but you maintain the square outer edges. The surface will be ever so slightly curved though.

I'm using the extrude and weave to get the over/under effect. Unchecking the over/under does fix it, but only because it is now flat, not woven.

Sculpting is the only way I could make it look good and still use your original shape.

I thought that maybe a small fillet on the corners might help but, interestingly, when I applied a .1" fillet to the top corner it worked fine but did not on the other two. In fact, it changed the whole shape. Something is amiss.

gkas,

I couldn't make flat but compromised with the middle cross section and some smoothing.

gkas, one last thought.

Couldn't you create a pocketing toolpath in the overlapping corners to level them out?

Just an optional thought.

Good luck,
Brooks

I found the design vector in the "Clipart" section and used that with the square section and it worked as it should. Looking at the clipart vector, it has more nodes than the original, maybe that has something to do with it...joe

With a rounded cross section, the problem goes away. I'll play with it more when I'm home and off my laptop.

tnx,

Gerry

Joe seems to be on to something. I used your vectors and added a node back from the point, on each side about the width of the profile (about .5"). Then changed each of the vector sections from the new node to the point into a line. Works good using your profile.
