Router bits

Post by Ross W »

I am new to cnc machines but would like some guidance.
Can anyone tell me the difference in using traditional router bits for cutting, versus the two or three flute end mill type cutters.

Traditional router bits as you have called them have flutes, the flutes are the cutting edges & most bits for hand-held routers have 2 flutes

The main difference is the geometry of the bit, bits used on a CNC machine are often spiral fluted bits whereas the traditional bits tend to be straight flutes, a lot of the CNC bits also tend to be solid carbide bits rather than having carbide inserts which are either braised on or replaceable.

There is absolutely no reason why you can't use the more traditional bits on a CNC machine & many people do

A spiral bit will help with chip evacuation which can be an issue on thicker material
