I have recently downloaded the free trial of desktop and have now become aware that only tutorial files can be saved.
Is this correct as the website said there are no limitations on the free download?

That is correct.
I guess it could be confusing the way it's worded but why would they give you an unlimited free trial with all features enabled? There would be no need to buy the software then.
You can use the trial free projects to make sure that your machine setup is compatible with VCarve and then you can do everything else you want using the 3D toolpath preview safe in the knowledge that when you buy the software all those designs will work.
