Black Lacquer or Epoxy for Photo v-carve

Post by jenordyke »

I have limited experience using photo v-carve, but based on "ok" results shown to friends and family, I have a waiting list for several 8x10 sized portraits (mostly kids faces). The few times I tried this before, I poured and cured a thin layer of white epoxy, then vcarved, then sprayed black lacquer and sanded back. As I say, the results were "ok." I have also you-tubed people filling the carving with black epoxy rather than spraying black lacquer. Spraying black yields a textured surface, the epoxy fill method creates a smooth surface, but other than that are there situations or conditions that recommend one method over the other?

I change back and forth on my finish, sometimes tinted epoxy like the first 2 photos or paint the entire carve with a thinned acrylic paint the “erase” what I don’t want with 000 steel wool the last 2.
