Creating a lip or recessed profile cut?

Post by Natenator76 »

Trying to think through the logistics of a project I want to do which is going to need a portion of a profile cut to be 1/8" recessed from the rest of the profile cut such that it's singular piece and not two separate pieces.

Can anyone help point me in the direction of such an initiative?

Thank you.

Cheers

Can you provide a sketch of what you're trying to do?

Hi and thank you for the reply.

Attached two images.

This would be looking at it from the X axis

This view would be if looking at it from the Y axis
recessed cut side profile.jpg

Basically its all one piece but an area of the piece is cut at a lower depth than the other but cannot be cut as two separate parts... they need to be a singular piece.

Not sure if that made sense?

Thanks

**** Question: When you say PORTION ---- How much of a PORTION is to be 1/8" recessed from the rest?

Yeah something like that. Recessed section will be about 18.5"x5.5" and the other section will be about 2.25"x7" with a z height difference of 1/8th between the two

So the sketches posted above are only half the object and should be mirrored to show the full cross-section?

Yessir. That's basically what I am trying to accomplish. Not the same design obviously but having a section of the material that's above the rest of the material. Looks like you got the jist of what I was looking to do.

Is that a moulding too path?

Nope!

A 1/8" Roundover Bit ON the Vector set to 1/8" deep after pocketing the outer perimeter. Easier and less time in carving!!!

so how does that work for something that might look like the attached?

I can't apply a pocketing toolpath to the side that's 0.875 because vector is open and closing it would mean having two separate pieces, no? I feel like I am analyzing this lol

Three Actual Toolpaths Used --- These are the "Settings" I used!!!

1.) Hog out --- Pocket ToolPath .25" Endmill
2.) CleanUP --- .125" Endmill to cleanup Both at .125" deep Offset Cut Direction "Climb"
Inside a Closed Vector - Pocket ToolPath

3.) Profile ToolPath with a .125" Pointed Roundover Bit Machine Vector -- "ON" Direction "Climb"
