Groove and Rabits

Post by halodri »

Hello,

I want to cut some rabbets and grooves in a workpiece. When I've done this in the past, I've always extended the grooves in my Sketchup drawing beyond the actual length to ensure the router cuts the entire groove completely. However, this is somewhat annoying and time-consuming.

Is there a tool in Vcarve that will take care of this automatically?

I'm a Vcarce and CNC newbie so excuse my basic questions.

There's no automatic way of doing it as there is nothing in the software as standard that knows the size of the tool and the direction the overcut needs to be made.

You can use the size tool with link XY unchecked to make the rectangle bigger in one direction, taking care of where the anchor is. If it's a true rectangle (4 line segments) you can use the rectangle tool to change the dimensions as well.

I created a gadget a while ago (https://gadgets.vectric.com/V11/dado_creator) that creates automatic overcuts but it's meant for cutting rabbets and grooves the same size as the tool being used so may not be what you need.

No different than Sketchup or any other drawing program.

Drawing them beyond is actually easier than exactly hitting the edge.

Ok, I see, so I need to continue what I'm already doing. Thanks for the reply Adrian and John.
