Tapered Ball Nose from Beckwith Decor BDP001B Side Angle?

Post by John Adkerson »

Hi all, A friend of mine sent me a .0625 Tapered Ball Nose that they purchased from Beckwith Decor Products but never used. The Bit is BDP001B
I found out that Beckwith is no longer in business so I can't look up the spec on the bit to enter it into my Tool Database. I know the tip radius is .0312 and Dia is .25 I was told that the side angle is 3 degrees but I don't know if that's for one or both sides so I either need to use 1.5 or 3 in the angle. Anybody using this bit that could let me know? I left the bit at the shop and am trying to add this at home or I would just measure the angle myself.

From this link from archive.org you find:
Beckwith Decor Products is the sole distributor for our own set of custom 3d cutters, which are designed for high speed cnc 3d profiling.

The set BDP-3d consists of 3 cutters all with a 1/4" shank, 3" OAL & ball end.
  • BDP001 is a 1/16" diameter with a 3/4" LOC
  • BDP002 is a 1/8" diameter with a 1-1/2" LOC
  • BDP003 is a 1/4" diameter with a 1-1/2" LOC
Given those numbers you could draft the cutter and figure out the side angle. Or find a similar product from another manufacturer with those specs and copy their numbers.

Thanks, drafted it and it came out to 1.45 per side in my calculation, so 3 degrees sounds accurate. Guessing I should go with the 1.5 angle since that would be one side

Just a FYI Update to my post, The BDP001 was 3/4" LOC. The BDP001B was 1-1/2" LOC. Re-drafted and came up with a side angle 86.4 = 1.508 deg

I will admit that it has been many years since I sat in Trigonometry with Miss Trish, but I'm not following how you came up with that angle.

Splitting the bit in half the shaft radius is 0.125, and the cutting edge length is 1.5. I come up with just under 5 degrees.

A couple of things:
  • what if the length of cut is B in your diagram rather than C?
  • if it is B then that's to the tip of the ball so C will project farther beyond the end of the bit affecting the actual length of B and the angle
For that matter even if the LOC is C that is from the side of the shaft to the tangent of the ball and the triangle still projects farther past the end of the tool.

From the link the that Adrian provided I got another link that I plugged into archive.org to get this old Beckwith page from 2018 which lists the side angle for the BDP001B.

Even more from the horse's mouth so to speak.

Thanks for the links. I was pleased to find a brand new set of the 3 Beckwith bits recently on eBay for $89.

No more Beckwith?

I stocked up on cutters before I retired knowing I would not have money in retirement. It has been a few years since my last purchase. I do like the TBN cutters from them and will miss them.

I have also used drillman1 TBN cutters with good result.

Lots of choices, lots of options.

No more Beckwith?
Sadly, Gary Beckwith passed away. He was a great guy to talk to with lots of good advice.

The bits he offered allowed our shop to get into some specialized 3D carvings that we could not have done otherwise.
