Vcarve 11 on new mac M1
Vcarve 11 on new mac M1
Good day.
Looking into buying a new laptop and was looking into one of those new macbook pro M1.
Is anyone running Vcarve or aspire successfully on the new m1 macs?
If yes is this with parallels or other software? Actually this is the only thing holding me back into buying this laptop.
I need to 100% that this will work otherwise I am stuck with a windows machine.
Thank you!

Re: Vcarve 11 on new mac M1
This for Aspire...cant speak about Vcarve
I just bought a new M1 Mac in December. I have the latest version of Parallels installed as well. When I migrated my old Mac software to the new Mac the Windows 7 would not run as it is not ARM compatible. So I let Parallels download Windows 11 as I had a license for it.
I could not get Aspire 10.5 to run under Parallels. It would start ok, but if I tried importing any artwork it crashed. Just on a hunch I downloaded the trial version of Aspire 11 and its running just fine! The only issue, so to speak, is that all of the cnc files need to be on the C drive of the VM. Seeing as thats the only place I use them I dont consider that to be a problem at all.
I will soon purchase the upgrade as all looks to be working fine so far.
Hope that helps.

Yowza! It does work. I can confirm that VCarve appears to work under parallels on my M1 Air. Moving the files to somewhere on C:\ was the secret. I missed the fact that the 'Desktop' folder was actually a mounted share from the Mac. Running 11.09 I think, with Windows 11 ARM up to date.

I have to ask, how is the performance? ISTM that going through, literally two virtual machines (one of them emulated), that it's got to be sluggish - or worse...

Re: Vcarve 11 on new mac M1
Good morning, everyone.
Just wondering about the current status of this issue. Almost a year on, I’m "still" waiting to purchase a Macbook Pro with M1 chip, as I have two obstacles: Not being able to run VCarve on it; and not being able to run MS Excel Power Query on it.
I found an article today (dated 18 Jan 2022) stating that Microsoft has released a new version of Office for Mac that "includes an updated Excel app with 100% native support for Apple silicon machines", including the Power Query functionality. So that obstacle appears to be resolved.
The remaining obstacle for me is running VCarve (through Parallels) on the M1 Macs. Based on comments in this thread from Holzarbeiter and dwkdnvr, it sounds like it does run, at least with the latest versions of Parallels and VCarve. So, I’m interested in an update to TomWS's question of how efficiently it runs.
Any updates?
Thx, rink.

I just bought a low end Windows gaming machine to run Aspire beside my CNC. For Aspire, about 3x faster than my three year old I7. Cost less than an Ipad air.
If you are making the purchase for a Vectric product - lower cost to continue with Windows.

Re: Vcarve 11 on new mac M1
Good afternoon everyone,
Just updating this thread with my recent experience.
I purchased a MacBook Pro 14” with the new Apple M1 Pro chip, received about a week ago. I installed Parallels v17, then installed Windows 11, then installed VCarve Pro 11. The install of Windows 11 hung up and stayed hung for about three hours before I stopped it and re-tried. On the re-try, it installed in just a few minutes. (I also spent a couple days installing many other applications that I use regularly which don’t require Parallels or a Windows virtual machine but run natively on the Mac).
VCarve Pro opens and runs with no problems. Creating a new file, drawing a simple square, and calculating a simple profile tool path around that was quick and easy.
Then I opened an existing .crv file stored in a folder on the “Mac” side of things, a detailed picture frame with several carving tool paths. Everything functioned ok, but the graphics were very slow. Rendering the tool path preview took significantly longer than on a native Windows computer.
So VCarve Pro DOES work on an M1 Mac, using Parallels and a Windows virtual machine.
I find it ironic…that EVERYTHING about the Mac itself, AND the myriad other applications I installed on it have worked flawlessly and lightning fast…except the Windows stuff. The Windows installation hung up on the first try, then VCarve runs slowly. Thus confirming my decision to migrate away from Windows to MacOS in the first place.
Of course, everyone has their own preferences and I'm not trying to kick off a debate, just relating my own experience. I’ve been a big fan of Windows for many years, but I finally grew tired of all the technical headaches. A couple of my very technically-oriented friends convinced me to try the Mac. Sure enough, this Mac is amazing in its simplicity and functionality. The slow performance of VCarve running under Parallels is a small price to pay for the other benefits of the Mac. IMHO, anyway.
Thx, rink.

Re: Vcarve 11 on new mac M1
I'm not surprised (would have been surprised the other way around). What you have are two virtual machines going on. One is parallels emulating Windows, that's probably not too bad with all the improvements made with that combination. The real bottleneck is that ALL that Windows code is natively Intel processor instructions. Every one of those instructions has to be emulated on an ARM processor. Now the ARM is no slouch, but that's a very tall task to ask of it. Where an Intel processor runs each of those in less than one cycle in hardware, the ARM needs to do it by executing a sequence of several instructions.

Re: Vcarve 11 on new mac M1
Good morning everyone.
Just the latest update on running VCarve Pro on an M1 Mac. I'm using a MacBook Pro with M1 Pro chip, Parallels Desktop 17, Windows 11, and VCarve Pro 11.014.
I'm documenting today's challenge here for the benefit of anyone else who might stumble on it: Clipart files.
In VCarve, when I select the Clipart tab, there were no graphic files shown. When I clicked the refresh icon, a message box indicated that I was logged in and that the content would be refreshed automatically in the background. Unfortunately, it did NOT refresh in the background.
I was finally able to download all the design files manually by right-clicking on each individual category folder (Borders, Animals, etc.) and selecting Download from the pop-up list.
BTW...
I've been using the Mac for about a month now, and wow! After several decades as a die-hard Windows fan, this finally feels like what a computer was meant to be!
Thx, rink.

Good to hear! Thanks for the update! Every time I get a notice from MS that I should/must update my OS, I think, Hmmmm, maybe it's time for a Mac...

Re: Vcarve 11 on new mac M1
The price…I’m a little frugal. Well, ok, I’m cheap. It was excruciating to pay the price for a Mac. But a couple buddies gave me a broader perspective. Considering the built-in apps and the longevity it’s not that much more than a windows PC in the long run.
One friend has a 22-yr old Mac that he bought to edit videos of his daughter when she was born. She just graduated college and the Mac is still going strong. Another friend has one 7+ yrs old, never had a technical problem with it.
The way everything works together seamlessly is incredible. We got iPhones a few yrs back and the Mac synched with my phone with virtually no work on my part.
Yep, I’ll never go back. Will sacrifice whatever other budget item I have to in order to stay in the Mac ecosystem.
Hope the moderator doesn’t hack up this post, I’ve probably broken some rules. haha!
