drilling holes inside a vector

I have dxf file of a xmas tree
I need to place 240 .125 holes evenly within the body of the tree.
any idea how to go about this.

I’m not at my computer just now, so I may not have the terminology correct.

But look at Shape Nesting, I believe it is. See if that will allow you to evenly spread them.

Need VCarve Desktop PRO or Aspire, I think.

First and foremost the .dxf file is comprised of open vectors. These vectors will need to be joined to form a closed vector x-mas tree before you are able to assign a set of holes within or on the body of the x-mas tree vector.

Noted that a real tree would not have anything non-random, make an array of 15 x 16 0.125" circles within the vector boundary of your "tree."

Drag them individually around and judge whether they are randomly spaced. Save your work. Cut and drill your tree.

You'll be done with this task quicker than finding a calculated way to do it.

If you have a non-desktop version then nesting is probably the simplest way of getting an even spread. You can set the tree to be the nest border and set one circle to be 240 copies. You'll have to play around with the tool diameter and clearance settings to get all 240 to fit in the tree with no gaps. You'll almost certainly still have to move a few by hand but it should get you 99% of the way there if having them evenly distributed is important.

How do i go about setting the nest boarders to the tree?

Depends on the version of the software you're using.

Prior to version 11 you make the border the last vector in the selection and check the "Last vector is nest boundary" box.

With V11 onwards you put the nest border on a layer on it's own and set that as the border in the dropdown in the Nest Boundary section of the Nest Parts form.
