Vcarve on a 3 dimensional surface
Is it possible to vcarve a design onto an irregular shaped surface such as crown molding or must the surface be flat.

Re: Vcarve on a 3 dimensional surface
You can if you have a 3D model of the surface. (The moulding toolpath doesn't make a 3D model.)
You must have Aspire to make the model of the surface if it is not in the clipart. There are half cylinders in the VCarve clipart tabs, but not complex molding.

Re: Vcarve on a 3 dimensional surface
If you have an STL model of the moulding (or other 3D format that vcarve will import) then it would/might work but you would need to be very accurate in measuring the moulding you were actually going to use & might require a lot of messing around setting things up, as Mike has said the moulding toolpath does not create a model & you can't create components with vcarve.

What does the crown molding look like and what part of the molding do you want to Vcarve on?

Re: Vcarve on a 3 dimensional surface
Well, I was thinking about an idea to make a box using a milled Ogee shape for sides instead of just flat pieces. I then would like to do some chip carving designs on the sides with a v bit. I think it would look pretty awesome if it could be done. But it sounds like I need Aspire to accomplish that. Hmmmmmmm

Well, maybe maybe not.
That's why I asked the question. How big an Ogee and where on the Ogee?
Can you provide a cross section of the Ogee and where you'd want to VCarve on it?

Not quite there yet….still imagining I will get back to you when I’m more organized. Thanks for wanting to help out.

Re: Vcarve on a 3 dimensional surface
I was browsing the net the other day and saw this box and I began wondering if I could make something like this on my machine....I do a lot of boxes with carving but always on a flat surface

Re: Vcarve on a 3 dimensional surface
I made this using the "Molding 7 - 99-996-283.v3m" clipart under Borders and Moldings in the Clipart folder. I just added 3 circles, created a Profile Toolpath and checked Project toolpath onto 3D model.

Re: Vcarve on a 3 dimensional surface
That's the Design & Make moulding 7 in the architectural elements collection so not in the standard clipart supplied with the software but there are a few that might work for this sort of thing in that collectionhighpockets wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 9:49 pmI made this using the "Molding 7 - 99-996-283.v3m" clipart under Borders and Moldings in the Clipart folder. So that can be done with vcarve??? I could not make it work??

Re: Vcarve on a 3 dimensional surface
Did you do exactly what John said? Works fine for me in VCarve. Obviously you'll have to use a different model if you don't have that one but the "Project onto 3D" will work with any actual model. As stated earlier in the thread something created by the moulding toolpath is not a model.

Re: Vcarve on a 3 dimensional surface
If you have a 3D model it can be done in Vcarve, John used a 3D model from Design & Make rather than one supplied with the software then created some vectors over the top, the vectors were machined the same way you would machine any vectors, the important step is to make sure you check the " Project onto 3D model" box as Adrian has said
Make sure you have a good look at the toolpath preview before you actually cut anything, you might get unexpected results with the vector carving because the surface your machining isn't flat
As Mike has already said it can't be done with the moulding toolpath because the moulding toolpath does not create a 3D model for you to project onto. It only previews what will be cut in the toolpath simulation, it doesn't actually create the component if that makes sense?
