Tool selection

Post by ReneeL1980 »

Hello all

Im after some advice on tool selection for fine text carving, I have the following tools...

https://www.toolstoday.com/global/v-144 ... 177-k.html

I am trying to carve small but each time its coming out quite rough.

I am using the single line font choice in Vcarve.

Thankyou :)

What is the material? Some woods will always leave a rough finish without treatment first.

Also you might be using the correct tool but with the wrong feed rates.

Generally I cut single line text with a 30 degree one of these Wealden Tool bits but a lot depends on the size of the text and the look you want.

There are quite a few different factors to consider when cutting text no matter what type of toolpath you are using. Try a search on the forum as it is something that has been spoken about quite a bit so all the answers you could possibly seak are already on the forum

This PDF someone put together is aimed at v carving but it will still apply to what you are trying to do

Never machined pine, plywood has lots of different types so may depend what type of plywood, Ash can be problematic, at least here in the UK the ash that I buy can be
Dense hardwoods are always going to be best for very fine detail & text
