Rifle stocks

Post by jimandi5000 »

Hello all,

I have a new project... my farther in-law passed and I have 25+ rifles and shot guns with most of them have broken stocks. These are not collector guns. Most are Wal-Mart guns and many are the same Remington 22 models.

Question: has anyone made rifle stocks before?
What is the best wood what should I look out for?
Thanks,
Jim

I have made them. Not with a CNC but the old fashioned way. I'm actually making forestock furniture for a friends rifle very soon. I have used maple and birch for stocks. I personally find maple to be the best to use.

Not something I have done but have seen a few done by others, hardwoods are obviously going to be your best bet, depends what sort of look you are after really, have seen them made out of beech & walnut, might have seen one in Mahogany as well but it was cut from a very old bit of mahogany not the stuff you seem to get today which is a lot less dense from what I have experienced personally

Full Stocks or just the Butt End?

I have made an SKS Rifle Gun Stock out of Mahogany using my CNC machine.

It was a very Challenging Project!!!

The most sought after gun stocks are made in Turkish Walnut but i would guess that you would
have some mighty fine Black walnut in the USA
