Wooden chain - adjusting 3D components

Post by JwoodCNC »

Hi everyone, hoping for some help. Please bear with me, I am a complete beginner using a CNC at a community woodshop. I do not have access to Aspire -- just vCarve.

I have having fun making wooden chains from the project of the month (https://www.vectric.com/vectric-communi ... oodenChain) and I've been experimenting with adjusting the size.

I was able to adjust the size of the project to create a smaller file (80% of previous size). Many thanks to everyone who helped with my last question.

However, I haven't been able to adjust the 3D modelling to make the curves appear the same. In the original chain, the surface of the links is flat in the centre (with curves at the edges -- at least that's how it turned out for me.) In the smaller version, the entire link is rounded over. (I tried to upload the files but they're too large.)

I'm wondering if I can make adjustments to the 3D modelling paths (where the bit is cutting, how far down it comes) without having Aspire. I've tried to watch some tutorials and adjust the fade/tilt but I don't think this is the right tool and I'm having problems finding a tutorial that explains what adjustments I can make.

Apologies if this isn't clear. It's a big learning curve for me and I appreciate anyone who takes the time to read this!

Making your file available will help with finding a solution to your issue, the following instructions were posted by another member it should help you,

In case you need the instructions for uploading files: How do I upload files or photos to the forum?

If a file is too large to upload you can place it on a file sharing site such as drive.google.com or dropbox.com, make it shareable, and then put a link to the file here.

Also, for screen shots it is better to use the Windows Snipping tool rather than your phone. The images made from the Snipping tool are clearer, and the files are smaller than the ones produced by your phone.

I'm not sure why you would lose the flat on the chain just by reducing the size to 80%, but someone will have an idea and your file will help them,

Thank you. I've uploaded some files to Google Drive. Here is a photo of the regular size chain (from the Project of the Month files).
https://drive.google.com/file/d/11zMqT- ... sp=sharing

Here are the files I modified to be smaller:
Side A: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1q87X2I ... sp=sharing
Side B: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qsEZVm ... sp=sharing

(I do note in Michael Tyler's photos his links appear a bit more round than mine did. I will try adjusting my mounting method in case that makes a difference. I have made about 10 chains so far though using his precise measurements and they all have a bit of a flat surface to the links - sides are rounded. I like the way this looks.)

Thanks for your help.
