notching the end of a rectangle

Post by jonathanmahnken »

I am trying to notch cabinet partitions for a nailing strip across the back. I draw the partition, then draw a small rectangle over the area I want to notch. I then use the clipping tool to cut away the area I want to. The problem is that the clipping tool is only working for me sometimes. and I dont know why. Most of the time it will clip out the rectangle for the partition and leave what im trying to clip behind. is there a better way to deal with this? What am I missing?

Make sure none of the vectors are Grouped before using the clip (I assume you are referring to the scissors tool?).

Also make sure the 2 rectangles are actually touching (best to use the alignment tools). Sometimes the trimming tool is a little wonky when trying to trim overlapping lines, so I will often quickly open the smaller rectangle in node edit mode, hover the cursor over the overlapping side and type "D" to delete that side before trimming.

Along with what dealguy11 says, I usually zoom into a problem area and sneak up on the vector to trim. Watch the scissor cursor to see when it changes as you get closer. That usually fixes the problem for me.

Attached is a file showing:
  • how I think you're doing this (horizontal rectangles at top and bottom)
  • how I would lay things out to trim out the notches (vertical rectangles on left and right sides)
By not having the partition and notch rectangles share the same edge you lessen the chance of confusing the trim trim which is somethings finicky.
