Joining two circles

Post by ricklach »

I am trying to construct a dust collection fixture for my router. I have two circles - one 3.5 in and the other 4" to which I have applied a 1/2" offset. The circles are spaced about 1" apart. I have joined the two outside circles with straight lines at the tangent of each circle to form the shape I am looking for. Now I want to eliminate the inside portions of the outside circles that are bounded by the lines to form the shape I am looking for. How do I eliminate the semi-circular vectors inside the boundary.

Sounds like you need to use the "Interactive Trim" tool. It looks like a pair of scissors, and you just snip those inner pieces away.

Now that implies that those straight lines you used to connect the circles actually intersected the circles.

I always go beyond anything that I want to intersect, because I can always trim off the excess.

Normally, one would just use the trim tool (scissors). This works for the upper arc. However, the right hand tangent line doesn't actually touch the lower circle (zoom in).
To draw a line tangent to 2 circles, use the Create Line tool, click on the first circle, then click on the 2nd circle close to where tangent point would be and press "T".
Good judgement comes from experience.
Experience comes from bad judgement.

Thanks, that did the trick. I had to re-draw the lines.

For this type of job, I'd use the Tangent gadget, then the Trim tool to delete the unwanted vector sections.

I'm still using V4.5, so this gadget might not be suitable for the later versions.

There is also a great tool within the Boundary tool, check the box for Rubber Band Boundary.
Select both your outer circles and click create.
Zero offset will give you what you are asking for, but also putting an offset in will probably save you the next step if thats what you're after.
I use it a lot :-)

You also have an extraneous circle quite a ways out from center.
