Compairing "add dimensions" to object size

Post by spes »

Hello,

Why when I "add dimensions to the 2d drawing" are the #'s a little off compared to selecting object size? I've added dimensions to 2d drawings in more than one place with same results, so I don't think it's a case of slightly off placement.

What do you have the number of decimal places set to in the dimension tool?

I use that tool a lot and I've never noticed it showing dimensions differently to how any of the other tools show them as far as 2D goes.

I'd be interested in seeing a file showing the behaviour to get to the bottom of it.

I wonder if it is a matter of snap-to tolerance not set or not set lose enough?

I just turned snapping off and got the same dimensions in the "add dimensions" tab. Which differ from the object size tab.

Remember that the object size tab shows the size of an imaginary rectangle around whatever is selected. If the object you are measuring is at a slight angle the sizes will differ when using the dimensions tool.

Also it's important to select the correct dimension setting which relates to what Steven is saying as well.

Take a 50mm square for example. It will measure as 50mm in every tool and setting. However rotate it 1 degree and it will now measure 50.865mm when selected or in the resize tool as the selection measures across the shape as a whole not one edge.

Now if you were to use the dimension tool set to "length" and measure one side you would get 50mm. However if you set it to "vertical" or "horizontal" you would get 49.9924mm.

Three different (and correct) measurements from the same shape.
