Table Top Circular Chamfer

Post by Burton Joinery »

Hi all,

First time poster. Using VCarve Pro 9.5 for our CNC Router Machine.

Have a client asking a circular chamfered bit of plywood or MDF to sit under a table (image attached).

Trying to figure out the most economical way of doing this. I know I could probably do it with fluting tool path, but im trying to do it with the moulding tool path which seems like it should work but its just chamfering the wrong way. Is there a way to make the tool path happen internally rather than externally? The moulding toolpath has always been a nightmare for me!

Image attached of the moulding tool path (just a rough idea) that I need inverting if possible.

Thanks,

So small update from myself!

Ive just downloaded the new update (11.0) as I noticed it had the chamfered tool path which I thought would be perfect.

So trying to figure it out now. Im using a bullnose cutter as using the V Bit didnt allow me to change the angle enough (as you can tell by the picture the angle is shallow and chamfer width is quite large) and the V Bit made me stick with a 30mm angle which was too sharp.

When I use a bullnose it doesnt smooth it out. Is there something im missing to make this an option?

Thanks again for any help!

Would it be possible for you to post your file? If it's to big then add a dropbox or other link.
It's easier to see whats going on if the file is available

Thanks for your reply!

Of course, hoping this is the correct file for you to check out. Its only a test file so not too large!

For the bits, im using a 6.3mm bullnose or a 12.7mm 45 degree V Bit.

Cheers

It's not a toolpath I really use so I don't know the logic behind it but I know from previous posts on the subject that you need to reduce the pass depth on the tool (you can use the Edit button on the Tool selection in the toolpath) to a lower value. The lower you go the smoother it is.

Ah, thats a nice fix, I like simple things like that!

Cheers for your help, seems like that'll work nicely.

I've corrected the moulding toolpath in your file. When using a moulding toolpath, you only need the profile at the top. The vertical and the horizontal vectors in your original just mess things up. Make sure that the start node of the profile vector is the one that will be on the rail vector when it starts carving.
