Artifacts using an offset finishing toolpath....

Post by UtahJock »

Every corner in the offset tool path leaves a ''line'', see attached. I have also included pics of the tool path preview and final carve rendering. The tool was a 1/16'' taper ball. I tried to use the raster tool path which doesn't leave any artifacts, but takes more than five times longer to carve (over 20 hours). Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I only have 2 years experience in this game but I would guess a tramming issue in this area of your machine, it does not show up in the preview so it’s not a software issue.
You could look at the g code and see if it calls for a Z drop at that point and that would confirm machine or model issue.

Just a thought, but before Stepover Retract was introduced;
STEPOVER RETRACT ON OFFSET.jpg
You wound up with lines like these;
LINE 1OWL ENDGRAIN CLOSE1 OFFSET CONVENTIONAL.jpg
LINE 2 OWL ENDGRAIN CLOSE1 OFFSET CONVENTIONAL.jpg
Do you have retract on with a number?

Scott is right, if it's not showing in the preview at highest Preview Simulation Quality...
It's a machine/hold down/whatever problem.

My personal favorite was random lines showing up Only when he leaned on machine to inspect the cut.
His weight caused machine flex and random lines that took him a while before the "Lightbulb" went on:)

Oh...Offset machine in certain circumstances CAN be faster, BUT nowhere near 5X faster!
Double check those toolpaths, and especially tool settings with tool Edit.
SOME thing is different different in the toolpaths I think!
I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself

Not sure I understand your post completely, you said that raster didn't leave any marks but was 5 times longer, do you mean that they show in the offset toolpath preview & not in the raster toolpath preview or have you actually machined this project using both options?
As the others have said if it is not showing in any of the toolpath simulations then the problem is likely to be with your machine somewhere, could be a couple of things causing it :lol: :lol: :lol:

I have run this with both the offset and raster tool paths. I have only posted pics of the offset run. The offset tool path takes about four hours to run, the raster takes 20 hours. I have some other problems with different tool paths (both a swept and a pocket) that show zero problems in the preview but have problems carving. No problems show up in any previews. If there are ways to increase the resolution of the preview, I am unaware of them.
I have posted this also to the Axiom Precision forum hoping to get some help there.

Thanks again for the help!

You can increase simulation quality under the tool paths menu, see attached.

I use the offset cut with a lot of my work, with a climb cut instead of conventional. Use the retract, .010” should be enough. Consider using a corner with a radius on the vector square you are picking for carving. Two things will generate the lines, the stepover to the next size (which is a hard 90° turn) and the 90° turns from the square.

And there should not be a major time difference from offset to raster. Check settings on tools for the difference.

Just curious if X,Y,Z feed rates are the same or close on those cuts?
May explain the raster/offset time difference?

Thanks again to all who have posted. I did a high resolution preview and it doesn't show any artifacts. There are experts looking at this on the Axiom forum as well. Given some other anomalies I'm getting it might be the machine. In the future I will try some of your other suggestions.

The guys on the Axiom forum had some suggestions regarding stepover retract and using gold satin as the preview material. Everything is fine now. Thanks again for your help!
