"Harley Saga Tiny" OR "I must be Insane" :)

Post by scottp55 »

At the end of this thread my Wonderful Aunt said something that gave me a belly laugh!
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=37764

"Funny....I sent her the 2 off the machine pics...and she sent them to her sister and others.
AND they got talking about her 90th BDay in October, and she mentioned she'd like
something "Special" for people at the party. And my Lovely Aunt said;
"Why don't you ask Scott to make up 100 Small ones of that?"   "

And I totally blew Mom off with a "NO WAY!!"
I mentioned it to Highpockets, and said;
"Maybe I should cut the small ones with a .5 Ball Nose? THOSE would be FAST :) :) "

And THEN like the idiot I am, I did a REALLY rough draft of the "Harley"! to send John a pic :)
I decided .5" BN was pushing the joke too far, so made it a .25" BN.
HAHA .25 INCH BN.jpg
And thought "more detail than I thought...wonder what a 1mm TBN looks like?"
HAHA 1MM TBN.jpg
"Hmmm...that's getting there....5mm?"
HAHA .5MM TBN.jpg
And THEN when I plugged in a .25mm TBN
HAHA .25MM TBN.jpg
I sent John a message "I"M CRAZY.....SHOOT ME NOW!!" :)
So went as far as adding my Onsrud 30degree engraving bit with a .005" flat
TINY HARLEY .5MMTBN AND 30 ENGRAVING.jpg
And cutting times (Rough).
HAHA CUTTING TIMES.jpg
Definitely KNOW I'm crazy now,
as I was inspecting my Ocooch 4X24X.25" "Scroll saw ready" Bloodwood stock left from buttons!!

Now I'm figuring "How often does your Mother turn 90!!"
I've done 3D buttons smaller than that for $40...
and Bloodwoods of Michael Mezalick's "Small Celtic Dragon" for Leo's "Meet and Greet" (for FREE:).

Did NOT want to put this on the other thread that Mom will read!!
May be a few protos coming up

Should have called this "The Possibly Neverending Story",
as Mom is the oldest of 6 Aunts and Uncles...and THEY may get ideas!!

Do you, like myself, have relatives that never even think about paying for some of that?

Yep Tex(both of you:),
The same Aunt had Mom bring me 3 antique chairs.
Snapped dowels/split arm rests(poor design)/and fish/hide glue(??) shrunk to heck...
AND already repaired by at least 2 people.
Did my VERY best repairs and improvements where I could...
cleaned years of gunk off with Watco rejuvenating oil and 3 towel scraps and it still looked "Old" :)
Charged her half my hours at minimum wage....
Mom said my Aunt said "Is scott charging me extra 'cause I have money?"
I said to Mom "Forget about it..she owes me nothing" AND never did another repair job for her!!
Lesson learned! :)

YEP John!!!!
We seem to specialize in simple projects that grow, and Grow, and GROW!!! :) :)
Tomorrow is trying to change model depth so the Harley seat looks good,
but the 30 Engraving will carve the seat and tires with only that bit!
Thinking Bloodwood, as it sinks in my molten oil/wax bath(and sometimes water for that matter).
And so much natural oil, only one coat after is needed...and it cuts clean and has natural lustre.

Need to have a rim around it, and maybe a Pointed Pound Over(PRO) bit for cutout and
a hole to hang from(like a key fob or Christmas remembrance ornament).
THEN it should have a font( Monotype Corsiva?),
so grandkids will remember her and the occasion(wonder how that font will do TINY!)

My Mom is worth it...BUT DOUBT it will be 100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have to see Actual cut times, and make sure the batch size can be done in minimum one day.

Design and proto will take awhile!!
Funny(in a bad way) that Maine will be hotter than Houston, Monday and Tuesday!
Designer of the house (me  ) should be SUED for not adding AC 26 years ago!!! :)

Think I started this thread JUST to make me DO it :)

I'm guessing your Mom isn't across the pond so I'm thinking you might be able to talk a few of the appreciative dudes on this here forum to Zoom in and sing Happy Birthday at her party. Maybe that will let you off the hook for some of those little replicas of your gas pumps...

With friends like you John.................................. :)
At least I've got finishing large batches of small stuff down pat now:)
11.18.15 batch 1.jpg
And the Foredom and wet sanding area for the cutout edges is still grungy and ready:)
FOREDOM STAND 3.jpg
And 4 of 6 HDO carrier boards are still dead Flat :)

No Tom, only across 2 small rivers(6 miles).
Thanks for the thought, but I think 100+ voices age 14-88 singing will be Quite enough! :)

Finally, after MUCH putzing around, got something that's a definite "Maybe" for a trial cut.
Here was the first one I thought was a "Maybe".
2021-06-28 08_21 FIRST MAYBE.jpg
And after a LOT of tweaking, got this ready for the actual trial cut for the 4" wide stock.
7.3.21 TRIAL CUT 2 1.95 WIDE TINY HARLEY FOR 4 INCH OCOOCH BLOODWOOD.jpg
Here's the 3D vector boundary size :)
7.3.21 3D VECTOR BOUNDARY SIZE TRIAL CUT 2 1.95 WIDE TINY HARLEY FOR 4 INCH OCOOCH BLOODWOOD.jpg

Searched through all my Ocooch 4" wide "scroll saw ready" .25" stock for Bloodwood,
and out of 50(maybe 60?) we'd ordered for a couple years....5 culls were all I have :(
Quite a variation of colors running with the grain, but think aligning with grain looks best.
(this is just the default Padauk with grain running at 90 to what I intend)

Good enough for a trial cut on a Good 7" scrap piece of Bloodwood STILL on HDO carrier board from
2 YEARS ago!
Good to get Actual cut times for a scale factor.
As much as I hate it, .25mmTBN and Then the Onsrud 30 degree engraving with .005" flat looks best.
BUT I'll do one with just the .25mmTBN, and the other with just the engraving bit and compare.

IF I have to use both..approximately 2 hours just for the 3D!
Probably have to do batches of 4 3Ds at a time (for 2 days(?)), then do the font/holes/cutout?
We'll see in a few days what they actually come out looking like.

A philosopher once commented on one of my posts:

“ Of course if you're not careful...You'll be "Tweaking" stuff for Production!! :)
(production is all well and good....but Boy does it get boring Quick!!:)”

I thought it might be appropriate to add that in here.

Very apropos Bill.

Back in 2013 when I had Just started...Mom came into the shop very frustrated.
She had knitted 3 scarves for some Nieces,
and had spent the day searching for "special" buttons to no avail.
Looked at the machine and said "Can that THING make buttons?" :)
I said "I don't know, let me play with some things."
So very first attempt, and then posted on Shopbot Forum;
12.8.13 VERY FIRST BUTTONS.jpg
And got one of my mentors VERY accurate predictions;
A CAUTION TOO LATE FROM BRADY.jpg
Next thing I knew, Dad had gone whole hog and dropped everything to make new designs
and make a new spoilboard for production using carrier boards and started what turned out to be
Thousands of buttons and keeping what turned out to be TWO bins(one shown) with at least 90 in each!!
3.27.16 Alosada-5 NEMS SHOW.jpg
Luckily I only had to do that for 3.5 yrs!!!! DID get old, as I was only supposed to do protos and designs
for a second Desktop to do production(but that didn't work out after 1 yr with trial operator).

Thanks Steve and Scott!
BUT 100 of them at 2+ hrs each JUST for the 3D(never mind finishing) IS an insane "Time Sucker" :)
WAS going to do the 2 trials today on that primo scrap piece, BUT Mom shows in a few hours
with a "PLEASE can you drill holes in a bucket of oyster shells TODAY"
So I might have time to pick one of the culls,
and get it prepped and onto the HDO for dimensioning and finish sanding, and lie to her what it's for.
Has to be .23" thickness, as using a Whiteside .5" (.25"R) Pointcutting Round Over for the cutout.
Might as well use one of the culls to see what they'll actually look like.

One of the things I learned doing buttons, and I had a blank with Heart/Sap lines...
Instead of throwing them out...we kept them separate and in order.
Then sewed them on a special display card so you could see it was the same board...
and charged DOUBLE (and they always sold out first). :)

IF relatives ask in the future for something similar,
I'll say "SURE....$100 Each" :) :)
THAT should keep demand down...and if they're willing to pay...It'll be worth my while!

One thing as it's Summer with wild variations of temps/humidity(Tuesday was 97F/today MAY hit 61),
I'll probably just model 4 (maybe just two as is?), as if 2 tools on 3D are necessary, it can't move!!
Then just move my X axis to a new temporary X-Zero...rinse and repeat when time is available.

First two will be interesting, second pair after tweaking(?) MAY be interesting...
after that, it's just hours and hours of cutting. :(
Hard part will be explaining why machine and sanding bench are covered up If Mom shows up. :)

That’s going to keep you busy for the summer. I’d be too impatient to have to spend that much time on each and probably crop the design so you just had the motorcycle on the fob instead of the whole gas station, since that seems to be the important object. But you will be creating a small treasure for each recipient this way. Hopefully they will appreciate it as such.

It's begun
Bloodwood was taken town to .235" and then 220/400/600G, and a coat of linwax yesterday.
Flatness IS king...should have skimmed spoilboard just before these cuts, as calipers show .23-.245"
Bloodwood as mentioned were the striped culls from 50+ Ocooch 4X24X.25" blanks.
But really came into it with linwax on for 45 minutes before wiping off.
6 AM and ready for the .25mm TBN Finish Toolpath...model is .12" and start depth of .01".
8.2.21 BLOODWOOD TINYS 1 JIGGING.jpg
So was worried a hair about a .125" shank starting at .13" and going 1.5IPS in all axis...
the Sytool bit took it in stride
8.2.21 BLOODWOOD TINYS 2 .25MMTBN START.jpg
but don't think I'll try it with linwax on that cut again as it's just too deep.
8.2.21 BLOODWOOD TINYS 3 .25MMTBN FINISH.jpg
Not quite as clean as I'd like, but bit had 2 Sharpie marks on it, which meant 2 4hr cuts in bit dulling wood,
Or 2 8hr cuts in woods like Maple.
8.2.21 BLOODWOOD TINYS 4 .25MMTBN FINISH.jpg
Zeroing Exactly in the middle of the cuts with a plate,
then for the Onsrud 30degree Engraving bit with .005" flat, I filled with linwax,
8.2.21 BLOODWOOD TINYS 5 ENGRAVING READY.jpg
waited 20 minutes, and then started the same Finish toolpath with that bit.
Depth was right I think, as the 30 cut just at the start, and then linwax stayed clear until it hit
the fine details of the Harley's wheels.
8.2.21 BLOODWOOD TINYS 6 ENGRAVING JUST TOUCHING.jpg
I'll Know in 2+ hours how it comes out.
IT'S TINY!!! :) :)

GLAD I didn't mention this to Mom...making me nervous:)
Thanks Bill!! :)
scott

Oh.....Taking pictures of the backyard critters is MUCH more relaxing!!
7.28.21 CAUTIOUS DOE'S TWINS 1.jpg
The twins were walking RIGHT over the beaver den where Mama has kits....
wonder what a beaver hearing tiny footsteps on the roof tells her kits. :)

30 engraving done....hate the way the flash bounced on the fresh oil, but I can live with these.
Still has a trace of Bloodwood/Oil slurry that may brush out in a few hours.
