I've had a request to carve a sign, the letters should appear to be done with a woodburning tool.
Anyone try something like this? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Phil

Re: Wood burn sign look
I'm assuming that you do not have access to a laser.
You could try running a V bit too slow and with a very slow feed rate. I've burned more than my share of pieces while learning feeds and speeds. Some of my V cuts look like wood burning as a result. This is not great for the bit, though.
Plan B: Mask the job, run the V cut, then use a "burn coloured" stain in the cut. You may want to seal it with sanding sealer first to prevent bleed.

Re: Wood burn sign look
I haven’t done this.
I might try v carving using a start depth that allows me to burn this v carve after cutting. Use a torch to burn. Then come back over the top to shave off the surface burned areas.

Re: Wood burn sign look
I'm thinking like Charlie, but like him I haven't done it.
Have torched a Maple blank with a 1.5" brush flame propane torch
JUST light enough to be black, but light enough so black doesn't rub of on finger, and then carve. Maybe torch like that, and the do raised font?
And then on keyfobs, we got a last minute change in the order to "burn" them after the were cut
Using a mini "Blazer" butane torch I torched them lightly. Not exactly what you're looking for Phil, but Blazer might be better doing like Charlie said?
Not exactly sure what the project looks like...just a couple thoughts.
