Flattening Bit is Gouging
Flattening Bit is Gouging
I'm trying to flatten a new wasteboard. Genmitsu 3018. Spindle is tight. and bit is tight. It is a new spindle. Randomly, the bit will gouge the material and then proceed on its way. The attached photos document the setup and the gouging. The crv file is attached as well. Can anyone figure this out? Thanks.

Do you have an image of the material cleared of all dust?

How is the board held down? I don't see anything holding it?

Your Z plunge rate is really slow (0.025IPS= 1.5 IPM). Can your controller handle a feed rate that slow?

And of course you've trammed the spindle? Not that out of tram would cause this kind of gouge, but worth asking.

Re: Flattening Bit is Gouging
Those machines are not at all rigid. Not cracking on your machine because any machine is better than no machine at all. A 1 inch diameter bit is mighty big for a machine like that. Try something smaller, yea, I know, it takes longer, but that is what happens with machines lacking rigidity.

Thank you all for the replies.
1. The board is held by blue tape and CA glue, it is solid.
2. The plunge rate is slow but the controller handles it just fine.
3. No, I have not trammed the spindle.
4. I have used this bit before without problems. The machine can handle it fine. I take very shallow passes.
Could this be caused by electrical interference? Should I ground the machine? Thanks.

Re: Flattening Bit is Gouging
Electrical interferance can cause all sorts of problems but your machine should be grounded properly even if it isn't causing this problem, use a star configuration when earthing the machine.
As Ted has said it's a big bit on a machine that isn't the most ridged, it may well be a combination of things rather than one thing alone. You have used this bit before so it may not be as sharp now, your cutting at a fairly low speed for a spindle which means that you have a lot less torque so the combination of a big(ish) slightly dull bit cutting with a low torque might be causing the spindle to stall
Try increasing your spindle speed & obviously your feed rate as well to see if it makes any difference.

What's a star configuration?
It sounds like an important thing to know.
Thanks,
Bob
