3D Roughing Stalls

Post by sylvan356 »

I am trying to help a friend with VCarve Pro 10.5 which he just purchased. We imported a 3D object and had no problem. However, when I attempted to create the roughing tool path VCarve starts the process and then hangs up and never finishes requiring a restart of the program. Can anyone help figure out what is the problem why it will not create the toolpath? Attached is a copy of the file with the imported 3d object.
Thanks.

I only have Aspire, but when I tried to create a roughing toolpath from that model it was a bit of a challenge. Mine didn't "hang" per se, but I got error messages that the pass depth was too big for any typical tool I'd select (e.g., .25 or .1875 ball) so it wouldn't calculate the toolpath until I changed those settings. The fretboard radius in the model is so slight you really have to ratchet down the pass depth and machining allowance. Then what you end up with is a roughing toolpath that just cuts a small amount on the outside edges. I think this is a candidate for a finish toolpath only.

Your model is thicker than your material

I agree that a finishing toolpath is all that is needed. Calculated with no issue at all.

Finishing tool path alone did the job. Thanks to all! I still wonder why VCarve would stall in the middle of calculation with no message requiring a restart. Certainly not the way Vectric products usually behave!

What settings were you using? I've tried multiple roughing toolpaths and they all calculate in a few seconds with no hangups.

Your material thickness is .03" That is thinner than most veneers. Are you sure that it's not supposed to be .3"

I see a material thickness of .3" and a model height of .27" and that leaves a .03" gap.

Adrian -
Saw your message asking for my setup. I was at home so it took today to get to the machine and duplicate the "problem". Enclosed is a screen shot of my settings and the progress bar stalled. Let me know what you think?

If you choose: Raster Direction "Along Y" does this occur?

If you don't choose: Order "level by level" does this occur?

And the default pass depth setting for a 1/4" end mill is going to be way too much given the very slight taper in the model. If you edit the pass depth for the end mill down to .03 or something tiny, does it still hang?

It still calculates fine for me with the same settings using the default 1/4" tool in the database. Guessing it must be tool settings.
