Cutting Festool domino mortise holes

Post by acebetter »

It would make my life easier if I could cut the mortise hole of a Festool domino on my project, so it is ready to accept the tenon end of a Festool domino. Does any one happen to have a Vcarve file with the correct dimensions of the various Festool dominos?
thanx
Jeff

It's just a rectangle with a radiused end, it would probably be quicker to just measure the width of each size rather than try to find the info from festool
Mine are all metric with me being in the UK & I think on your side of the pond then will be imperial router bits

Or you could make your own version of a Domino.
I made one and it works pretty well.
There are other DIY designs. Search Youtube for DIY mortising machine.

Yes, and the thicknesses are all metric sizes, either 5, 6, 8, or 10mm. The Festool website has the widths, which are all close to 20mm, plus or minus a few mm's.
It's good practice learning to draw ALL your own vectors.

Festool is quite consistent in this manner. All their tools, bits, and tenons are metric, even here in Imperial heathen land. Only the operating voltage and frequency seems to change (or tolerate) to what we feed it.

In sort of an inverse of "A Pint is a pound, the world around." A 10x50 Domino is, indeed, 10mm thick, and 50mm long everywhere.

10 mm is 10 mm even in "imperial heathen land". But for some reason 1/4 inch becomes 6mm (instead of 6.35mm) quite regularly in "metric tool vendor land"... :D

Just shows how important it is to always check the true sizes of your cutting bits :D
I'm in UK so buy 6mm bits which are actually 6mm

I routinely cut Domino mortises on cnc parts. Just draw out the profile and make some trial cuts to get the fit you desire and then save them. I just use a 1/4" bit so it is easy to vary the morose width for a proper fit. When I later pull up the files I do a quick trial cut to check the fit with the chosen bit and setup before cutting the parts. I do a lot of projects with cnc cut Dominos with Festool cut ones.
