Dumb, dumb, dumb

Post by rtibbs »

Sometimes I can be so dumb.......
Toolpath was supposed to be set at .565 depth of cut
When you miss the decimal point bad things happen (DOC = 565)

The really dumb part is my setup sheet has it in bright red letters. Why do I bother printing the set up sheets if I don't look at them ?

Ron, I just want to know how close to that DOC did you get?

I got as far as the collet nut on the spindle.
That’s why I never leave my machine unattended while running. Before I aborted the cut it had a pretty good burn mark going in the wood.

I thought I saw some smoke and the smell of burning wood coming up from Florida. That explains it!

Been there, done that. Had the scorched spoilboard to show for it.

While it is somewhat important for the X and Y, it is absolutely critical for the Z axis.

I didn't try THAT deep, but doing a single line font in Teak....changed .1" to supposedly .125"
Never CHECKED the preview :(
1.25" cut with a 1.5" bit.

First indication was my spindle bogged down for the VERY first time ever....
THEN I smelled the smoke....
who knew Teak smoke smells like burning chocolate! :)
f and stupid .125 NOT 1.25.jpg
ER-20 collet and nut have LOUSY cutting qualities!!!
(took 1 day soaking in acetone to get the 3 pieces apart and then cleaned...what a ton of stubborn gunk!!)
I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself

How true about the battle scares. Second day on my Stinger while resurfacing spoilboard I buried collet in spoilboard far corner, scar still there to remind me to check twice.

Do we receive some sort of a “Merit Badge” to remind us of our errors or just the lingering smell of smoke?

If I had a dollar for every dumb thing I have done just on my cnc, I could probably afford a machine with z range of 565 inches! Love the story...thanks for sharing!

I had this sign on my CNC. Guess what it is a list of.
