V-carve calculates Pocket toolpath

Post by Bowpond »

Hi, I'm brand new to this, so trying to take everything in. I've watched tutorials over and over and I am missing something. I ran a toolpath using V-carve with a V-groove 90 bit, to just engrave lettering on a board as I figured this would be an easy place to start! I select the v-carve icon, complete the details, and when I go to view the toolpath it runs a pocket toolpath, where it removes everything except the letters? I tried changing depths, and vector path, but no luck. The crazy issue is that I got it to run once in V-carve, but when I tried to replicate it, I keep getting the opposite to what I thought I was creating? I know I'm missing something really simple, but I am stumped! Any help sure would reduce the frustration level!
Thanks

Sounds like you have an extra vector outside of the letters selected as part of the toolpath. If you have some text and then draw a shape, such as a rectangle, around it and then select both when you create the toolpath you will get exactly the result you're seeing.

If you can upload your CRV file that will help us help you.

How do I upload files or photos to the forum?

The toolpath in the file you uploaded carves just the letters like you want. But you also have a border vector, and if you selected that as well as the text for a VCarve toolpath, it would give the result you posted about (As Adrian suggested.).

Thank you everyone for the comments! It makes sense now that I think about it. Is there anyway to v-carve the letters along with using a border, as in a sign? Or just by adding the border does it change the toolpath each time?

Use the profile toolpath (Maybe .06 deep.) to cut on the line with a VBit. Or offset the border vector a small amount and select both vectors with the text in the VCarve toolpath.

You can get a good explanation of how the VCarve toolpath works in the Help-Help Contents.
