Shelf pin holes along a curved path?

Post by andyl1000 »

I'm making a curved wall shelf.
I need to move these blue shelf pin holes to center to the orange line...
My hope is that I can draw 1 circle and array along a path (and maintain vertical spacing).
Any other ideas?

Thanks!

That's what I would try. The challenge might be to get the circle's radius to match your curve, but from that point it will just be a matter of testing the spacing increment. Treat the circle as a construction line.

I could write you a gadget to do this. Are you using VCarve Pro or Desktop?
Thanks,
Jim

Won't the "Copy along Vectors" tool do what you want?

The 'Align Objects' tool will sort of do what you want. You need to create the curved line first and 'Copy along Vector' your circles at the spacing you want. Then create the straight line, highlight the circles and 'Align Objects" to the straight line. When you copy the circles along the arc they will not all be the same spacing apart but when you align them to the straight line they will all at least match. Just an idea, I could be wrong.

Draw the curve and use the "Copy Circles Along Vectors" tool. Then use the "Mirror" tool.

The problem with using Copy Along Vector is the Andy want to maintain the vertical spacing.
I can't figure out a way to do this completely automatically. I made one circle used Array Copy to make a vertical row of circles, then moved each circle individually to the curved vector.

This may simplify it a little.
Array horizontal lines that go from the center of the circles and cross the arc. Trim them to the arc. Copy all of the circles. With Geometric Snapping turned on (F4), move the copy of each circle to the other end of the line.
Good judgement comes from experience.
Experience comes from bad judgement.

I actually had this problem a year ago and did it as Mike described. As with most situations trying to come up with an elegant and efficient method took much more time than just finally jumping into the inelegant and inefficient method.
