How I would do it using the Copy Along Vector:
Draw the line you wish to dot.
Draw a circle the size of the spaces desired and Copy Along Vector.
Group the circles.
Select the line and then shift click to select the grouped circles.
Use the Trim Objects tool--Clear inside boundary to make the spaces.
Delete the circles.
It turns out one can trim to multiple (closed) objects in one step if they are grouped first.
