how can I import a jpg file so it is one line rather than two close together
I imported a line art jpg and it comes out two lines

That's the way the trace works as it's not a centre line trace and if you're creating a v-carve toolpath you need both sets of lines.
You either need to edit the vectors to remove the lines you don't want, only toolpath the ones you do want or use a centre line trace program instead

Try RapidResizer. It is a free online tool. You can save the results as an SVG or other formats. It works fine for some images. Others it just sits there and spins.
