Drilling Dimples

Post by Neal Mucklow »

Hey Guys,

I'm in the process of creating a marble type of board game! My problem is I cannot seem to come up with how to drill multiple "holes" to a specific depth but larger diameter than my 1/4" - 4 flute ball nose bit? What am I missing here? I'm attempting to drill about 200 Dimples, 9/16" diameter to a depth of somewhere around 1/8" to 3/16" deep. Seems simple enough, but my testing has not turned out well. It is basically a pocket of that size. [img][

Have searched you tube and forums, to no avail,
Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,

Try this and don't forget to use the Ramp - Add ramp to toolpath - Sprial
Would also recommend using a 2 fluted EM.

If you had a slightly larger bit (say 3/8), then my suggestion would be to do these with profile toolpaths cutting inside the circle, using a spiral ramp. That works well for me in this kind of situation.

Not sure what problem you're having with pockets. Works fine for me.

Finally, a 4-flute bit??? Way overkill. 2 flute will be fine for the speeds and feeds a Shapeko can generate.

You could also consider a core box bit.

You could try something like the attached. Does a close enough job with just the 1/4" bit.

Excellent Idea Steven....Not sure about the cost to machining time for over 200 holes!!
Like you design, Thank you so much for the time to create the file for me!

That was a quick mock-up. Really, final drill path can be done with the tool's pass depth set to 1/2" to avoid any peck drilling as most of the material is gone at that point.

For that matter the profile passes could have had progressively deeper start depths to save time.

If time is an issue (presuming a production situation) then get yourself a dedicated cutter such as this: https://www.cabinetmakerwarehouse.com/c ... 2in-shank/

If the hole has to be 9/16" then get a 2 fluted 1/2" BN and use the Pocket Toolpath.
