line drawings

Post by CLASICOAK »

how can I take a line drawing convert it to a bitmap and carve or etch it in as one single depth almost like scrimshaw . my Z would stay still and I would just trace the image on to the project. -Jeff

Hi Jeff,

The best way to do this is not convert line drawings to a bitmap at all. In fact, the process is normally the other way around (converting bitmap drawings to nice, clean vectors).

So, if your drawings are already “good” vectors, all you need to do is import the vectors and assign a Profile On Toolpath to the vectors using a suitable bit (likely a V-Bit) and specifying the depth. For a “scrimshaw effect” the depth will be very shallow.

You might also try using the fluting toolpath.

That way you can use the options:
  • "Start Depth"=0
  • "Flute Depth"=<a very small amount to simulate scratching>
  • "Ramp at Start and End" (maybe just "Ramp at Start")
  • play with "Ramp Length" or "Ramp %" to get a fade in and out effect for the lines
