Pocketing a long U shape

Post by Daner »

I want to make a long pencil holder to insert into my work bench
My question is...how do I create the U shape.
It would more less be a slot 4" wide X 20" wide at the top... (holding lots of markers pencils etc)
and taper to a 1.25 depth.
I have never used the fluting tool path...would this be the route to go?
Any pointers?

Thanks in advance
Daner

Something like this 4" wide x 20" long by 1.25" deep can be done using the moulding toolpath with a ball nose router bit. May Take awhile but you can also use a box core bit of say .75" in diameter and it may not take so long to carve.

3 ways:
1. Moulding toolpath
2. Multiple parallel vectors with the fluting toolpath.
3. 3D carve a Clipart 3D tab (circular) (subtract).

Here's an example using the Moulding Toolpath.

thanks for the help guys, John i could not see your file, I'm still using ver 10
I like the idea of using a large 1" cove bit and the molding tool path
I just need to understand how to draw the semi circle and enter it into the molding tool path
Thanks

Daner, here's the rail and profile along with the Moulding Toolpath. The rectangle was just so I could get the correct profile.
Hope this helps...

Another suggestion. Use a round nose bit and run a profile tool path on a single straight vector.

Hi Phil,

That would require an awfully big Ballnose! I think the slot is 4” wide.

OK, Sorry. I didn't read the specs, just the question.
