longer endmills

Post by redwood »

I have a project coming up where I need to cutout a shape in 2" thick material, soft wood. Preferably a 1/4" upcut endmill. I routinely use standard 1/4" endmills for cutting out 1 1/2" material, but I think 2" material will be pushing it too far.

Who has them?

I've been happy with the long endmills from https://www.kodiakcuttingtools.com/ Long endmills do flex more, though. Change toolpaths appropriately.

Amana has a reduced shank .25" long end mill that can easily cut that deep. I own one and do pull it out when I need the smaller diameter, but due to its nature, there's some chatter sometimes if you push too hard and you can't do a finishing pass. I use a long .375" endmill for deeper cuts whenever I can because it's clean and has a cutting depth that works for most of the thick stock I need to deal with. What you have to be careful about, however, is how much available space/travel you have available on the Z axis when you are considering these longer pieces of tooling. You need to be able to clear the material for rapids while still having the length you need to get the depth of cut you want in that 2" thick material. IE...your CNC machine's capacity matters.
