openbook tool setup

Post by MJMStudio »

sorry to bother but I'm going to do the "Open Book" 3D carve 7"X4" its for the lid of a memory box for a family that lost their dad id this virus don't want them to wait for me to get this done can you help me with tool set up roughing with a .25 em to material boundary looks good, but the finishing path is at 20 hours I think my setting for the tapered ball nose is too conservative. its radius is1.0mm that has looked better in preview than the 1/8" ballnose what is a good tool set for the tapered ball?

How much better? I can't remember the open book fully but I would have thought a 3mm or 1/8" endmill would be fine. There isn't that much detail from what I can remember. Maybe just the very edges??
You could also look at running more than one finish pass, first one with the 1/8" tapered ball nose which will do the job much quicker than the 1.0mm & then a second finish pass with the 1mm taper BUT set up some vector boundarys so your only machining the detailed areas

Check the stepover on the 1/8" tool. Vectric projects are pretty much always designed with a 1/4" roughing and 1/8" finishing tool. If you're seeing a rough finish with the 1/8" it might be that your stepover is too high, 8 to 10% is the sweet spot for finish passes generally.

I have 0.006 depth pass and 10% stepover taper ballnose . would it be safe to increase stepover?
The 1/8" left the edges fat

Generally speaking once you increase the stepover beyond a certain point then you will start to see ridges because of the tool shape, you would then need to sand these out

As Adrian has said Vectric Projects are normally designed to be machined with an 1/8" finish if imported at their normal import size, the only way you then generally need a smaller bit is if you scale the model down in size

Here is another approach.
I used an 1/4-inch Endmill and a 1/4-inch Ballnose to cut the book. I then isolated just the “side pages” with a vector and used an 1/8-inch Ballnose
This option reduced the cutting time dramatically as you can see in the Toolpath Summary.
The preview is your friend.
My settings:
Roughing Toolpath: 1/4-inch End mill, Stepover 40%, Feed rate 150 IPM
Finishing Toolpath: 1/4-inch Ballnose, Stepover 10%, Feed rate 150 IPM
Finishing Toolpath (Side pages): 1/8-inch Ballnose, Stepover 8% stepover, Feed rate 150 IPM.
The size of my book is 11.6 inch x 9.1 inch.
I hope this helps

Stunning finish on the Open Book I am sure they will be very pleased.
The carving and highlighting of the text is wonderful also, the whole
project is absolutely professional.
