Surrounding a game of CHESS

I have always wanted to own (someday) a nice Chess set more for ornamentation than actual enthusiasm. (although I can play a little). Now that I own my own hobbyist CNC machine I may just have a go at making a nice playing field come storage box.
This is as far as I've got

Celtic rope embellishment followed inward by a four and eight-millimetre pockets. outer for edging band and inner for actual chequered squared playing surface (which will be raised, I think)
On the outside of the main patternation, I have around 15mm which I would like to include a kind of Roman Ogee routered edge or rather a Moulding toolpath, Can somebody explain to me the finer points of creating a 15mm moulding toolpath to finish this part of the job.

The plan is to have a drawer compartment beneath the playing surface and another top piece as a base minus the pockets.
I then will just purchase a nice set of Isle of Lewis chess pieces.

Always a good project C.

A good place to look is old issues of WoodSmith (you can actually get old issues on line digitally). I did a bunch of chess board/boxes from those plans years ago.

A hint about building chess boards/boxes: Get the pieces first! The pieces determine the box size. It is sort of like buying hardware before designing a project. Saves a bunch of frustration. The pieces will also determine how large each square needs to be.

In a much later issue they had another plan where the box had a drawer that held the pieces and was some kind of fancy.

I have researched the pieces and the history behind the origins of them. I have all the measurements of these and they are designed for a 50mm sq in regulation play.

Such a beautiful board why take away from it by buying pieces for it. Why not design, create, and make your own pieces? It would definitely make the set a unique one of a kind set you would be proud of!

I'm not at that stage in my learning process. maybe one day I'll get around to it. For now, I liked the idea of the Lewis Chess pieces and the history that surrounds them. I'll just be content on making a board (although not as good as some would be able to produce) that would display my set to the best of my current abilities and knowledge (which isn't a great deal) hahahaha

Excellent YES that's exactly what I'm talking about can you explain how you have done that.

1.) create a square around your celtic outline.
2.) Go to toolstoday.com select Classical Cove bit profile right click on image and save the profile image of that bit.

Here this will save you a little time.
3.) Import image into V-Carve and draw the profile (blue line) of the profile in the image. Make sure to join all vectors should be two curves (inside curve and outside curve) and a straight line in between.
4.) Once the profile vectors are joined size the profile to .590 Wide (15mm) and what ever is the thickness of your baord for the Height.
5.) Select the Moulding Toolpath and then select the square you drew first and holding down the shift key select the edge profile.
6.) I used a Large area clearance bit .25" end mill Check the box MACHINE FLAT REGIONS and a Tapered Ball Nose 5.4 Deg .0625"tip check the box VARY STEP OVER then Calculate

Hey, many thanks for that walkthrough tutorial.
Excellent call on using the tool profile from the site.
I did everything as you suggested and came up with the image below.
It's not perfect but it's something I can work on.
Thank you for teaching me how to do this, I will surely be using this process in many projects to come

Here we are with the recess for the board, looking good so far

Hardly the height of ornamentation but I'm happy with it.
I've been impressed with the new chequerboard post on the Aspire forum and feel I would like to incorporate epoxy resin over the board
