Made a Start
Time on my hands as this deadly pandemic looms over humanity. I made a start on the chessboard inlay.
Lightly sanded, and sprayed with a light satin sealant. I will clean out the channels again and re-spray before adding dark coloured paint.
After which I intend to sand the squares and stain. see how we go, so far so good.

Over the weekend I managed to get the plywood inlay completed, just an ordinary piece of scrap ply. V carved, stained, painted and sprayed with one coat of semi-gloss lacquer(came up rather well I think)
I left the lighter squares as the raw ply colour the darker ones I dyed with American Walnut

I also completed the baseboard (not the top for the inlay although It will be identical only with decoration added)
Sandwiched between these two main slabs will be a box drawer area for the pieces (it's all in my head atm folks so bear with me) lol

Tomorrow I will try and cut the box section before cutting the playing surface. I'm hoping to finish this in Epoxy Resin for an ultra Glass-like Finish

I'm happy with the progress thus far

Big C, your chess board is looking fantastic!
I really love your choice of chess pieces also, but a word of caution.
Ever since I was a little boy, I'm in my mid 50's, we've had an Isle of Lewis chess set in the house.
One thing that springs to mind is the foot print size of some of the pieces. From memory the King and Queen especially are quite large
in relation to the size of the board squares.
It's hard to tell just how big your squares are, so if there are different set sizes to purchase, consider the size of those pieces.
It would be a shame to have bigger pieces than the board's squares and it will be cluttered with the full set on the table.

Thank you guys for your kind and constructive comments. I'm still learning on this CNC journey, on each and every thread I post there is always a new caveat or little gem of shared information that goes a long way to making these projects possible. I'm indebted to you all.

Not a problem, I've done my homework on that score. If I was to purchase the lifelike replica set, yes, they would have been too large and I certainly didn't want to make a chessboard of that size with the added decorative Celtic Rope frame and moulding. The footprint of the King would have been extraordinarily large for my sq. size as you quite rightly drew my attention to. King Height: 3.25 inches (8.26 cm), King Base Diameter: 2 inches (5.08 cm). and to be honest there are not many places in our house I could have put that size of item. I have instead gone for the slightly smaller (medium) set (same materials and authentic design) to fit on my 42mm squares.
(see specs below)

Thanks again for viewing and bringing this to my attention, it helps me to put this reply out there for others to be aware also.
