Weird marks
Weird marks
Question. I've been using vcarve for a bit now making sign, logos, etc and I cant figure out why most of my carvings have little round circles in lots of the corners.

Re: Weird marks
It may be caused by your stepover being too large.
Does it also appear in the preview?
If you could post the actual CRV file that would eliminate and lot of random guessing.

Re: Weird marks
At those corners does your end-mill come straight down and then immediately retract. If so, the answer is simple.
Re: Weird marks
Heres a good example. Zoom in to see all the weird pockets and circles etc. I'll post my file when I get home for this one

Re: Weird marks
Do you see the marks in the preview?
Are you cutting with the V-bit, and then the end-mill, or the other way around?
How are you setting Z-zero when you change from one bit to the other?

Re: Weird marks
Nothing "weird" at all.
It is apparent you are not setting your tool heights accurately. The end mill is cutting at a different depth than the vbit.

Re: Weird marks
Nothing wrong with the file that I can see and the preview is fine as well. As others have said it looks very much like the error is when you set the z-zero when changing bits. There is often a slight discrepancy in the bottom of a cut made with multiple v-bit passes and an endmill but yours is way off.

Re: Weird marks
My turn to give this a go
I have reviewed your .crv file (vikings) and the preview shows exactly what you are getting with a difference being in your actual carve. Your carve shows a slightly deeper cut in the circles (which is produced by your endmill). This slightly deeper carve is induced by a slightly deeper z-zero setting, possibly material stress relief during carving or raw material not being flat. We are talking here the difference between software controlled depths versus human controlled and material setup depths. The software is based on math calculations with no human error factor, material stress relief factors, etc... induced into the equation.
Personally I would have carved something like this with a v-bit only. Sure it takes a bit longer but the results would not have all the circles versus v-carve (two-tone look) there at the bottom.
Of course the above is just my opinion/thoughts!

Can I assume that was a bit deliberate?

from FixItMike,
Interesting hmmmm!
Yeah, I see what you mean I guess in order for that statement to not be misunderstood I need to re-phrase with ---- "Sure it takes more time (carving and bit changes) but the results would not have all the circles versus v-carve (two-tone look) there at the bottom."

"need to rephrase" Heck no!! I loved seeing the pun. (Although my wife maintains they are the result of a genetic defect.)

Re: Weird marks
Well, the answer is not to use one bit to make all the cuts and just suffer through longer cut times.
It is much better to learn a technique that allows accurate bit setting. Might be a touch off pad, a sheet of paper, a brass gage bar, etc. Part of that technique is learning to touch the tool off in the same area, not just assume that the entire piece is perfectly flat.

Re: Weird marks
The deeper cuts on the Vikings logo is a different problem to the one that was originally posted where the flat cuts and the v-bits cuts seem to be nicely at the same depth.

Would it be possible for you to post your .crv file of your original post issue (the number 3)?
