Child's Metamorphic high chair plans

Post by Roysie »

Hi all,
Does anyone know of where I can locate the CNC design for a child's high chair which will morph into a low rocking chair. There are several pictures around of antique ones but the mechanism and proportions are quite tricky to work out and I would love to l get a set of working drawing for a chair. Any one have any suggestions please.
Cheers, Roy

Here is what I have drawn thus far in a 3D program in which drawings could be made and .stl files of the various parts.

Of course all measurements and fitup accuracy has not been checked. It would require hours of trial and error and probably a ton of wood to complete a working prototype.

Hi there Sharky!!!
Yes the photo is the idea of what I am after. Time wise, the youngster isn't born yet so I guess I have a while. I do understand the probs with the trialing and I thought I would have to do a lot of testing. The actual construction isn't too difficult and fairly straight forward, it's the toothed or cogs at the head of each leg and synchronising them so they don't lock up as it is raised or lowered would be the tricky bit eh? I gather that there is a Tee bar fitting each side which drops down into each side cog locking at whatever height is required. At what stage are you with the design & drawing? Would be interested in following how you are making out. Thanks for the reply, Roy

Chair Section High Chair.png
Roughing in the Chair Section as you can see I have added some uprights for the Arm Rests and Uprights for the Upper Back Support. The Arm rests and the Upper back support will be next. Then the only other part left is the table section. Once it is all roughed in and together I can go back and dress up the parts that need it. This to me is the easy part drawing it all out. The tough part still lies ahead which is making all the parts to their proper size and fitting them together. It is going to be an interesting adventure!

And from what I read and what I can see in the photos this high chair has three different height settings.

Progress report plans are 3/4's done. Got a bit of wood to start the trial and error for cut and fit check.

A slow and tedious process I will say.

The High Chair pictured in this thread in previous posts had been modified at some point in the past. The serving tray originally rotated up and over the head of the little one. In the previous photos
the serving tray is fixed with nails to 1" x 1 1/2" boards which both armrests are attached to the original arm rests with tiny nails. These small nails will be a challenge to remove without damaging the original small old armrests!!!

My high chair plans I am working on will be trying to create the high chair to its near original glory in my new modern version.

A very interesting challenge so far!! :)

Progress Report 2/15/2020

Started Cutting the parts for the High Chair Rocker Prototype. Cut the Rocker Feet (4 each 2 for each side) first last evening and removed tabs. They looked very similar to the ones in the photo of the Antique High Chair Rocker.

I will probably cut the rest of the lower section today consisting of locking mechanisms (2 each), slotted chair slides (2 each), and seat supports (2 each), and a single foot rest.

For this prototype all cross members will consist of dowels until I can find someone to make decorative looking dowel cross members. Maybe I can do a search on the internet for them.

@sharkcutup - just wanted to say this is amazing work, I (and likely many others) really appreciate this. Anxiously watching this thread!

Saw on your other thread you were offering training for donations - would be pleased to send you or your charity a contribution for this work!

Progress Report 2/16/2020

After removing tabs, sanding and router cutting on Router Table some outside edges for appearance, I fit checked the parts together.

Here is photos taken from front angle and a back angle.

Just love it when a plan comes together!! :)

Of course the real test is during the glue up and part movement phase. This will tell the real true story of the functionality of the High Chair/Rocker!
